“There can be only one way in which one can endure man’s inhumanity to man and that is to try, in one’s own life, to exemplify man’s humanity to man.”
- Alan Paton Cry, the Beloved Country.
Last week, my brother reminded me of this quote from Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton, in the Christmas card I received from him and his wife, Daniela. (Their first as a married couple!) How inspiring – And this does not just mean working at an orphanage. Lately, a couple of my friends have signed up for half and full-marathons to benefit cancer. My brother’s pastor encouraged his Washington D.C. congregation to open their doors to inauguration pilgrims, instead of avoiding them in the comfort of their homes. Heidi spends her free time and strategic planning savvy to help Hananasif develop a five-year plan.
Let’s use our talents, our pull-out couches, our best chocolate chip cookie recipes, our favorite music, our seats on the subway to live out this humanity.
This may surprise you, but I am not sure I believe in global change for the better. Frankly, I believe the nature of inhumanity to be too strong and too foundational for complete change. However, I do believe that the actions of individuals matter. They matter presently and eternally. Entire communities can change. Governments can change. Countries can change.
Look what Three Cups of Tea can do to a girl.
